Mahanikay is the name given to the sect or order of Thai Theravada Buddhist monks of the Lankavamsa lineage [1], which comprises the majority of monks in Thailand and is the conservative faction. Dhammayut was established with the objective of reforming and restoring monastic conduct to be correct and strict according to Buddhist scriptures, ensuring that monks adhere strictly to the Vinaya Pitaka in all good deeds, study the Pali scriptures with clear understanding, and restore the aspects of Thai Buddhism that have been deficient since ancient times, making it complete in both the Vinaya Pitaka and Sutta Pitaka. This was an effort by Vajirananavongs to help reform the Sangha and spread Buddhism more comprehensively in Thailand.
