Unemployment refers to persons aged 15 and over who, during the survey week, had one of the following characteristics: 1. Not working and without a regular job, but seeking work, applying for jobs, or waiting to be called for an interview within the 30 days prior to the interview date; 2. Not working and without a regular job, and not seeking work within the 30 days prior to the interview date, but available to work during the survey week. The Unemployment Rate is a statistic showing the percentage of unemployed persons in the economy relative to the total labor force. It indicates the overall economic direction: whether expanding or contracting. During good or expanding economic periods, unemployment rates tend to be low, as most companies expand and hire more workers. During sluggish or contracting economic periods, unemployment rates tend to be high, as companies reduce staff and do not hire additional employees, thereby lowering operational costs.
