Unemployment and Unemployment Rate

Unemployed refers to persons aged 15 and over who, during the survey week, had one of the following characteristics: 1. Not working and without a regular job, but seeking work, applying for jobs, or waiting to be hired within 30 days prior to the interview; or 2. Not working and without a regular job, not seeking work within 30 days prior to the interview, but available to work during the survey week. The Unemployment Rate is a statistic showing the percentage of unemployed persons in the economy relative to the total labor force. It indicates the overall economic direction: during economic growth, unemployment is typically low as companies expand and hire more workers; during economic stagnation or contraction, unemployment is typically high as companies reduce staff and do not hire additional workers to lower costs.
