The Department of Employment was established under the Act Amending Ministries, Departments, and Bureaus (No. 8) B.E. 2536 and the Act Transferring Powers and Functions of Certain Parts of the Ministry of Interior to the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare B.E. 2536, published in the Royal Gazette on 25 July 2536, effective from 23 September 2536. Subsequently, in B.E. 2545, the civil service system was reformed by restructuring ministries, departments, and bureaus. The Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare separated its labour and social welfare administration into two separate ministries: the Ministry of Labour and the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security, under the Act Amending Ministries, Departments, and Bureaus B.E. 2545, which was approved by Parliament on 24 November 2545, effective from 3 October 2545
